2019 AWARD FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

Over 80 graduate students from the current top 25 MFA programs across the globe in their final program year submitted one original artwork for consideration. The high caliber pool of applications has been narrowed down to eight impressive and diverse finalists, from which one winner will be chosen. The winning artist will be honored at the MTV RE:DEFINE Art Auction and Gala on March 29.

Once a year, the Goss-Michael Foundation invites postgraduate fine arts students in their final year at the top 25 graduate art programs in the world to apply for the MTV RE:DEFINE Award.

The MTV RE:DEFINE Award presented by The Goss-Michael Foundation was established in 2019 to recognize excellence in contemporary art by a postgraduate fine arts student across a range of disciplines. Students from the current top 25 MFA programs across the globe in their final program year may submit their work for consideration. There are no restrictions regarding age, gender, national origin, or artistic medium. The Award is designed to provide a bridge of financial support and meaningful connections for an emerging artist from one of the world’s premier scholastic art programs as they transition into their professional career.

Applicants will be asked to submit up to 5 images and/or videos of ONE original artwork along with a short artist’s statement. The winner will be selected by The Goss-Michael Foundation team along with an international panel of art experts who will review and evaluate each applicant’s work, on the basis of both aesthetic and conceptual merit. Results will be announced live at a future MTV RE:DEFINE event in Dallas, Texas, USA.

Terms & Conditions for the MTV RE:DEFINE Award presented by The Goss-Michael Foundation

  1. As part of MTV RE:DEFINE, The Goss-Michael Foundation (“GMF”) is partnering with Viacom International Media Networks (“MTV”) to offer the first annual MTV RE:DEFINE Award (“Award”), which has been established to recognize excellence in contemporary art by a postgraduate fine arts student. The Award is designed to provide a bridge of financial support and meaningful connections for an emerging artist from one of the world’s premier scholastic art programs as they transition into their professional career.

  2. The Award is subject to and governed by these terms and conditions (the “Terms”). By making a submission in accordance with the below, each Applicant agrees that they have read and understood these Terms and shall be bound by them.  

  3. To be considered for the Award, Applicant must meet the following qualifications:

    -be over the age of 18 at the time of submission;

    -have obtained parental consent where relevant;

    -be a current postgraduate art student in their final program year at one of the top 25 fine arts schools in the world. See the 2018 list below;

    -be available on dates on and around March 29, 2019, in the event that they are selected as the Winner, to participate in press events and possibly travel to Dallas, Texas, USA, to receive the Award at the MTV RE:DEFINE art auction and gala event. Possibility of travel to Dallas is subject to scheduling and logistical concerns at the sole discretion of MTV and GMF. Details to be determined by MTV and GMF;

    -not be an employee or immediate relative of an employee of GMF, MTV, the Staying Alive Foundation Inc., Viacom International Inc. and/or their respective parents, subsidiaries or affiliated companies or any other person professionally connected with this Award or MTV RE:DEFINE;

    -As all personnel involved in administering the Award will primarily be speaking English, GMF and MTV recommend that Applicants have a reasonable understanding of English and are comfortable conversing in English.

  4. GMF and MTV reserve the right to determine whether an Applicant is qualified to apply for Award. All decisions are final.

  5. “Artwork” shall mean any and all valid content submitted by Applicants in accordance with these Terms and Conditions.

  6. The Artwork submission process is as follows:

    -Applicants may submit for consideration ONE original artwork created solely by Applicant.

    -A maximum of ONE entry per Applicant is allowed.

    -Applications must be made via DropBox or emailed to sara@gossmichaelfoundation.org

    -If submitting via email, Applicant may send links to images and/or videos if they are too large (see size guidelines below). Links must remain active through March 29, 2019.

  7. Applications must include:

    Maximum of 5 images and/or videos of the Artwork

    -Images must be submitted as jpgs or pdfs with a size not to exceed 3 MB each

    -Videos must be submitted as .mov files with a size not to exceed 30 MB each (Applicant may email links to videos larger than 30 MB)

    -The image(s) submitted must accurately portray the Artwork being submitted.

    One-page artist statement, submitted as a .pdf, which must include: Artist statement not to exceed one letter or A4-size page

    -Applicant’s full name and date of birth

    -Applicant’s mailing address

    -Applicant’s email address

    -Applicant’s mobile number

    -Applicant’s Instagram and other social media handles

    -Name of university Applicant currently attends

    -Name and contact number/email of Applicant’s academic advisor and/or Dean.

  8. All submitted files must be named with Applicant last name and number of file (max of 6, including artist statement): e.g., Johnson1.jpg; Smith2.pdf

  9. The deadline for submissions to the 2019 competition is 11:59pm Central Standard Time on February 1, 2019.

    *Physical submissions of original artworks will NOT be accepted. GMF regrets that it will be unable to return any applications or artworks received by mail.

  10. Upon submission, Applicant agrees to grant GMF and MTV the non-exclusive rights to reproduce their likeness and/or artwork images (including on GMF/MTV websites, social media, and in the press).

  11. Applicants must notify GMF in writing by February 15 if they wish to withdraw their submission from consideration.

  12. No entries will be reviewed after the deadline, unless otherwise agreed upon at the discretion of GMF. GMF reserves the right to extend the deadline at its discretion.

  13. There is no registration fee to apply. However, internet costs in submitting Artwork may vary so Applicants should check with their service provider for current charges and seek the permission of the person paying the bill before entering.

  14. A panel of judges comprised of the GMF team along with an international panel of art experts will review eligible entries received prior to the deadline and select one successful Applicant for the Award.

  15. Judges will make their decision based on an evaluation of each eligible Applicant’s work, on the basis of both aesthetic and conceptual merit. The judging panel retains absolute discretion regarding decision making for purposes of the Award. The judging panel's decision is final at all stages of the competition.

  16. The panel of judges will choose 5 finalists, who will be notified of their status in late February, 2019.

  17. The Winner will be notified by email in early March, 2019. Results will be announced live at the MTV RE:DEFINE event in Dallas, Texas, USA, on March 29, 2019.

  18. GMF and MTV reserve the right to award runner-up experiences at its sole discretion.

  19. GMF and MTV reserve the right to contact any and/or all Applicants via email throughout the term of the contest in relation to these Terms and the Award and Applicants are advised to regularly check for messages.

  20. The Winner of the MTV RE:DEFINE Award will receive:

    -$15,000 US prize money. This cash award must be used for studio costs and costs associated with producing artwork for the Winner’s solo exhibition at GMF. Further details will be provided to the Winner upon notification of selection.

    -Solo exhibition of Winner’s artwork at GMF. The Winner’s solo exhibition will be mounted at the discretion of GMF. All details of timing, scope, artwork selection, etc., will be at the discretion of GMF.

    -Solo exhibition of Winner’s artwork at GMF. The Winner’s solo exhibition will be mounted at the discretion of GMF. All details of timing, scope, artwork selection, etc., will be at the discretion of GMF.

    -Winner has the opportunity to donate their winning artwork (or another artwork at the discretion of GMF) to the annual MTV RE:DEFINE art auction to benefit MTV Staying Alive Foundation, which is dedicated to stopping the spread of HIV among young people. The event attracts a number of important contemporary art collectors each year and garners significant international press.

  21. There shall be no other prize except the above award.

  22. The value of the Award is subject to change based on current market conditions at time of fulfillment of the Award. No other substitution, transfer or cash equivalent is permitted.

  23. The Award Winner is solely responsible for (at the Winner’s cost and expense)

    -obtaining all relevant permissions, consents, and releases from any individuals who may be identifiable in or from any artwork;

    -any and all applicable taxes;

    -ensuring he or she is fully able to participate in any press events as well as the Award events in person and/or via video conference or advance taping on dates in March 2019, as notified by GMF in advance;

    -If traveling to Dallas, obtaining any relevant documentation, permissions and/or consents (including, without limitation, valid passports, visas and/or other travel permits);

    -If traveling to Dallas, obtaining suitable travel insurance;

    -any other costs and expenses other than those expressly identified in term 24 (including, without limitation, spending money).

  24. If Winner fails to contact GMF as requested in a timely fashion or fails to provide information referred to in Term 3 within 3 working days MTV and GMF reserve the right to disqualify Winner and immediately select an alternative Winner who will be selected applying the same criteria as used to select the original Winner.

  25. MTV and GMF reserve the right to disqualify a Winner and select an alternative Winner in the event that MTV and GMF have reasonable grounds for believing that Winner has contravened any of these Terms.  

  26. MTV and GMF reserve the right to terminate the Award (or any part thereof) in the event that, in MTV and GMF's opinion, there are insufficient entries for MTV and GMF to be able to select a Winner or, in MTV and GMF’s opinion, improper conduct by Applicant (or any number of them) has rendered the Award unfair to all Applicants. MTV and GMF’s decision is final with respect to any aspect of the Award, including the determination of the Winner.  No correspondence will be entered into.

  27. The Winner hereby grants MTV and GMF the exclusive right to film, tape, sound record and photograph them at, and in connection with, the Award (and/or any related publicity event or promotional activity) and MTV and GMF shall own all right and title in and to all such films, tapes, recordings and photographs. In connection therewith, MTV and GMF shall have the right to use and authorize others to use the Winner’s name, likeness and any biographical facts which may have been provided by the Winner to MTV and GMF worldwide in any and all media (whether now known or hereafter invented).

  28. Applicants acknowledge and agree that they may be required to participate in publicity without further consent or payment if they are selected for the Award.   

  29. Insofar as possible under applicable law, each Applicant hereby irrevocably and unconditionally waives in favor of MTV, MTV’s affiliates and their licensees, assigns and successors in title, GMF, GMF’s affiliates and their licensees, assigns and successors in title, all moral rights and any rights of a similar nature in any (a) Artwork Materials and (b) any materials created in connection with activities referred to in term 18 above to which such Applicant is, or may at any time in the future be, entitled.

  30. Each Applicant hereby confirms and promises that it shall immediately at MTV and/or GMF’s request remove such Artwork as MTV and GMF directs and/or any link thereto from Instagram and any other platform or website on which the Artwork has been available by or on behalf of the Applicant in connection with the Award.

  31. Prior to being selected as the Winner of the Award, MTV and GMF may require the Winner to sign any documents relating to any Artwork or Artwork Materials and/or acknowledgment of acceptance of all the Terms and the Winner acknowledges and agrees that participation in the Award is conditional upon such signature.

  32. Decisions as to whether Artwork breaches or infringes these Terms in any way shall be made at the sole discretion of MTV and GMF.  Artwork that does not comply in all material respects with the Terms may not be considered.

  33. MTV and GMF can accept no responsibility for entries lost, delayed, misdirected or undelivered. Incomplete entries will not be considered. MTV shall not be responsible for technical errors in telecommunications networks, Internet access or otherwise preventing submission of an entry.

  34. The Award is as stated and non-transferable.  No cash alternatives will be offered.  If due to circumstances beyond MTV and GMF’s reasonable control MTV and GMF are unable to provide any part of the Award, MTV and GMF reserve the right to award a substitute.

  35. All Applicants acknowledge and agree that participating in the Award is not intended to create any relationship of employment between MTV and/or GMF and any Applicant and the Applicant is under no obligation to complete the Award.

  36. MTV and GMF shall not be liable for any loss or damage howsoever caused (whether in contract, tort or statutory duty or otherwise) arising out of or in connection with the Award other than death or personal injury caused by negligence of MTV and/or their personnel and/or GMF and/or their personnel, and/or deceit or fraud by MTV and/or their personnel and/or GMF and/or their personnel.

  37. MTV and GMF shall not be liable for any delay in performing or partial or total failure to perform any of its obligations to any Winner under these Terms if such delay or failure is caused by circumstances beyond MTV’s and GMF’s reasonable control including without limitation delays (to postal services or otherwise), changes, disruptions, cancellations, diversions or substitutions howsoever caused including, without limitation, as a result of war, terrorist action or threatened terrorist action, strikes, hostilities, civil commotions, legal or regulatory changes, accidents, fire, flood or natural catastrophes or arising, without limitation, out of or in connection with (i) the activities or third party event organizers or third parties providing any element of the Award; (ii) any form of transportation (including but not limited to flights, trains, coaches, buses, ferries, taxis or cars); and/or (iii) by third parties providing accommodation included in the Award. For the avoidance of doubt, the affected Applicant shall be solely liable for any additional costs incurred as a result.

  38. Each provision excluding or limiting liability is to be construed separately and will apply and survive even if for any reason any of the other provisions are held to be inapplicable or unenforceable in any circumstances. Each of the provisions excluding or limiting liability will remain in force notwithstanding any termination of these Terms.

  39. Any personal information, including without limitation, the Applicant’s name, age, address, telephone number, email address and/or nationality will be used solely in connection with the Award and for any purpose for which the Applicant specifically opts in and will not be disclosed to any third party who is not part of the Viacom group of companies or GMF except for: (a) purposes connected to fulfilling the Award where applicable. Any personal information held by MTV and GMF in respect of the Award will be held on record for a reasonable period to fulfil the purpose for which such personal information was collected. Any personal information provided to MTV and GMF by an Applicant will be dealt with in accordance with MTV’s privacy policy. If an Applicant gives MTV and/or GMF permission to pass on their personal information to a third party then this shall no longer be the responsibility of MTV and GMF and shall be subject to the privacy policy of that third party.

  40. Only entries from individuals are accepted. Any entries that MTV and GMF believes have: (a) been made via participation in a syndicate; or (b) via any form of machine assisted intervention enabling computer generated multiple entries, will be disqualified. MTV and GMF reserve the right to discount multiple entries for the Award from the same IP address.

  41. No purchase of goods and/or services whatsoever is needed by Applicants in order to participate in the Award.

  42. These Terms may be amended or varied at any time by MTV and GMF on notice.

  43. No waiver of any rights by MTV, GMF, or any Applicant will be taken as a waiver of any other rights it may have. For example, if MTV and/or GMF waives its right to complain about a particular breach of these Terms by an Applicant, it does not prevent MTV or GMF from complaining about other breaches.

  44. Nothing in these Terms shall restrict MTV or GMF from doing anything necessary to ensure that MTV and GMF comply with their legal or regulatory obligations and MTV and GMF may cancel or amend the Award (in whole or any part thereof) if to not do so would put MTV and/or GMF in breach of applicable law or, in MTV’s and GMF’s reasonable opinion, impair the reputation of MTV or any of its affiliated companies or GMF or any of its affiliates.

  45. These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States of America.
